On a weekend that saw a double-header for the Cooper Dust Series, with events in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, six more qualifiers for the Grand Final in the Tankwa Karoo was chosen.
The Mpumalanga-event took place at Bundu Lodge, just north of Nelspruit where the Lowvelder’s turned up to an event organised and ran for Dust Media by eRG lekker 4×4. Reynard Cronjé en Gert Boshoff pulled out all the stops to make sure this event was a thriller. The event ran in conjunction with the Fruit & Family Festival and ensured that enough spectators got their eyes on this exciting format of 4×4 eventing. With that being said, it is very likely that more competitors will rock up for the next event in the Mpumalanga series, and they will have to give it their all to join the rest of the field in the Tankwa at the end of the year. Winning won’t come easy.
Shaun van Rooyen with his Jeep Wrangler reigned supreme. The battle for second place was an altogether closer contest with Hennie Meiring also in a Jeep Wrangler beating Leon Papenfus (also in a Wrangler) narrowly to the prize. But both of them have made the grade and will be taking part in the final where ultimate bragging rights is up for grabs.
According to Reynard Cronjé, organiser in Mpumalanga, one obstacle in this obstacle course day changed everything. “At obstacle 6 there were still four guys in with a chance to be crowned the winners, and a few mistakes sifted them out nicely.”
But all is not lost for those who did not make the cut. With two more events lined up and the next best placed finisher on the log getting a wild card entry, there are still seven more spots open for the grand final – do you have what it takes to bag the ultimate bragging rights?
