The first Cooper Dust Series event ever to take place outside the Western Cape happened this weekend. The Free State-team got the ball rolling with André Botha and Jacques Swanepoel pulling some late nighters with the weather threatening to play havoc, a last minute venue change and all the other behind-the-scenes fun that makes event organising a blast. They pulled it off, and a great success it was. All competitors left the day feeling that they have truly used their 4×4 to its capacity. The scoring was also quite close, showing a rich vein of competition in the Free State which can pan out to their favour later in the year when they send their 10 qualifiers to the final. The other regions better watch out.
Marco van Wyk was the clear winner, but the battle for second, third and fourth place being decided only by a handful of points. Jaco le Roux missed out by a single point to gain his qualification spot at the final event, with Johan du Randt and Thomas Witthuhn beating him to the podium. But all is not lost for Jaco, as he currently holds the wildcard entry for the Free State series, and it is his to lose.
The next event takes place on 17 June, and it promises to be a showstopper.
